Tammy Brawner

/biography

Tammy Brawner was born and raised in Oakland, CA. She graduated high school from Skyline High  where she was a standout 4 year varsity basketball player. Her senior year she received all-league honors and MVP of her team as she led the team in points, steals, and assist. Brawner's high school coach, who had coached both men and women's varsity basketball for over 25 years, said her ability to handle the ball and get anywhere she wants on the court was the best he had ever seen or coached.

After graduating from Skyline High School, Tammy went on to to Cal State Northridge where she decided to walk away from the game of basketball. The gorgeous basketball player decided she wanted to pursue modeling and acting. Tammy says that somewhere along that path she realized how deep her passion was for basketball. After walking away from the game, Brawner says that, "from the moment I decided to walk away I always knew that I would be back playing one day. I didn't know how or when, but I just knew."

Brawner, an advocate for education, continued her education at CSU Northridge even though she was not playing anymore. She went on to graduate from that institution with a BA in Criminal Justice. After that, she decided that it was time for her to strap back on her sneakers. People discouraged her and highly doubted her. They never questioned her talent or ability. They just said that she had sat out from the game for entirely too long and it was no way she could get back in the game and play at a high competition level such as Division 1 or 2 of the NCAA. But Brawner, was, and still is, a very specially talented young lady. She has gifts and they not only lie within her ability and skills on the court, but they lie within her mindset. People who doubted her and counted her out only made her strive harder to prove them wrong. She thrives on defying the odds and proving people wrong.

Once Tammy graduated from CSU Northridge she began to coach basketball at the varsity level at the high school she attended in Oakland, CA. While coaching Tammy was still trying to figure out how she could get back into being a player. Even though she was regarded as one of the top coaches in area, she knew that it wasn't her time just yet; she had some more playing to do. She gained several connections while coaching and used those contacts to get into college basketball.

The coach of Dominican University of California invited Brawner to an open gym tryout. The head coach, Brianna Chambers, said the first play of open gym T-Time came down the floor, froze her defender with a crossover and then scored. Coach Chambers said after that one display by Brawner, she walked out the gym and said that's the point guard I want.

Brawner played at that private university under coach Chambers for 2 years where she finished out her remaining NCAA eligibility. She finished as an all-conference player and M.O.P. (Most Outstanding Player) of her team. While there, she also attained her MBA degree in Global Business Management.

Today, she is a professional basketball player and wants to send the message to people that nothing is impossible. She says, "everybody's route to success doesn't have to be the conventional route to success. Sometimes there are detours along the path there. Those detours often deter people," says Tammy. "But I like to call it the scenic route", says Brawner. "If you keep going, you will end up at your destination in due time. That's just the thing though, you have to keep going. It's so easy to turn around, but then you never fulfill your purpose." Tammy says, "I ended up accomplishing everything I could have ever dreamed of. I have my MBA, I play professional basketball, and I entertain. I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be. "
